You are heading right into summer and it’s that time of year when you want to spend as much time as you can on your patio or balcony. You’ve spent some time during spring enjoying the weather when it’s on the warmer side, but now that it’s going to be consistently warm and sunny, you want to make the most of this wonderful space. You moved into your apartment looking forward to having that outside patio or balcony, now use it! But what have you done lately to spruce it up and make it your own? We’ve talked about how to make your living space more welcoming and rejuvenated for spring, now let’s talk about our outdoor space for the warmer summer months.
Here are some decorating ideas to make your patio or balcony your own this summer:
1. Put down a rug or floor covering
Too often we let the exposed wooden or concrete flooring on our outdoor space remain as our only option. What if you or your guests feel like walking barefoot? You don’t want your outdoor patio or balcony to be functioning as a way to drag in dirt, and don’t you want to feel comfortable walking onto that space with or without shoes? It’s your space, give yourself some options and flexibility with it! A nice rug, carpeting, or fake grass can serve as a way to add form and function to your outdoor patio or balcony. Not only does it allow you and your loved ones to feel more comfortable, it also gives the space some texture and added visual interest. Be sure to find a good outdoor area rug with a nice pattern to serve as that added decoration the space needs. Outdoor rugs are typically more durable as well and clean up easily. You won’t regret this decision!
2. Add a bench and seating areas
This may seem obvious (and you may already have these out for spring), but think about adding a seating area to your outdoor patio or balcony. A bench, table and chairs, some like a hammock, it depends on your personality and what you want out of your area. An outdoor patio or balcony simply won’t be welcoming without some areas to sit and enjoy a summer cocktail, or two. A wooden seating area looks better than something plastic or “fake wood”; it costs a little more but it’s totally worth it as it gives a warm feeling to the balcony or patio. Decorate them with some pillows or cushions, even some blankets for those cooler summer nights, this adds a little bit of color to your space as well. Might as well make the endeavor multipurpose!
3. Planters: Add the great element of nature to your patio/balcony
Another great way to decorate your patio or balcony space is to add plants or flowers. Whether they are set on a table or hanging from your wooden columns or ceilings, they really add so much character to a space. Just as we recommended for your spring rejuvenation, this is a great idea for your patio or balcony space as well! Planters that sit on the ground are unique and can be as tall as 3–4 feet high, so your plants or flowers are nearly within eye-range for you and your guests to enjoy. The visual interest added to your space is invaluable with plants. They really are a must-have when you’re planning your decorating. You’ll love your outdoor seating area even more when nature is right nearby. Don’t pass up this idea, we promise you won’t regret the decision. Especially during the warmer months.
4. Add Lighting! This is the best idea for those nights out on your patio/balcony
We will close with one of the most fun ideas (we see our residents doing this all the time): add lights to your patio or balcony. These can be hanging lanterns or a string of lights that you can secure to the ceiling or your wooden columns. Some people like to string lights to their balcony railing to make the space more fun. When you’re enjoying your space in the evening, you want to have some lighting to help make the space more functional. And make no mistake, you can find decorative lights to match your space that add visual interest as well.
